Does a Rural-Urban Divide Exist in the Czech Republic?
Pavel Pospěch, Barbora Hubatková, Ondřej Klíma
Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2025, 61(3): 251-276 | DOI: 10.13060/csr.2024.009
This paper examines whether there is a rural-urban polarisation in values in the Czech Republic, similar in form and extent to corresponding developments across many western European countries and the United States. The paper uses a mixed-method design, combining quantitative and qualitative analysis. The quantitative part works with data from the European Values Study, differentiated by settlement size and commuting time, which allow us to distinguish between rural municipalities based on their level of remoteness. The qualitative part focuses on the media coverage of the relationship between rural and urban populations over the past ten years. This...

Lucia Kočišová
Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2025, 61(3): 277-300 | DOI: 10.13060/csr.2024.007
Interrater agreement is one way to establish reliability (and also validity) in social science research. The traditionally preferred method of measuring interrater agreement is the descriptive approach owing to its simplicity. This approach is also associated with a number of different agreement indices, which makes it difficult to select the right index. This article summarises theoretical definition on the prevailing approach used to measure interrater agreement (in both quantitative and qualitative research). From a practical point of view, the article focuses on the possibilities of measuring agreement by using percent agreement, the kappa coefficient,...
The Tendency to Agree with Items in Social Survey Regardless of Their Content as a Possible Source of Bias
Patrik Havan, Peter Halama, Michal Kohút
Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2025, 61(3): 301-321 | DOI: 10.13060/csr.2024.013
Acquiescence is defined as the tendency of respondents to shift their answer towards agreeing rather than disagreeing with items, regardless of the items’ content. As a response style, it can be a significant factor in distorting research results. This article examines the nature, predictors, and consequences of this response style and the possibility of identifying and controlling it. The results of time stability and domain/method specificity of acquiescence suggest that it is more a participant-related than situational-related construct. Two categories of correlates or predictors of acquiescence were identified: a high level of social deference/conformity...

Lenka Jakoubková Budilová
Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2025, 61(3): 323-332
This interview with Kate Holy, widow of the prominent Czech-British anthropologist Ladislav Holý, offers both a personal and scholarly perspective on the life and work of this remarkable figure in social anthropology. Conducted in connection with the forthcoming Czech translation of Holý’s Anthropological Perspectives on Kinship, the conversation combines Kate Holy’s memories with additional commentary by Czech anthropologist Petr Skalník. The text covers Holý’s life in exile in Scotland, his academic work and field research in Africa (among the Berti and the Toka), his relationship with both Scotland and his homeland, which he left...
