Jaroslava Hasmanová Marhánková

Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2021, 57(2): 143-163 | DOI: 10.13060/csr.2021.008

The increased mortality risk faced by people in older age groups due to COVID-19 became one of the key pieces of information that frames our knowledge about the virus. Chronological age is a significant factor that influences both the experience of risk and the impact of the pandemic in daily life. This articles discusses how chronological age and the category of 'older people' were addressed in social and health policies and the discourses surrounding the outbreak of COVID-19. It examines how these processes can affect the position of older people in society and the relationships between different generations. The article focuses on four main arguments....

Social Participation of Older Adults in Relation to Their Partnership History

Petr Fučík

Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2021, 57(2): 165-191 | DOI: 10.13060/csr.2021.012

How will the instability and diversity of family forms today impact the nature of people's close social relationships in the future when they are older? In this article I examine how the social participation of older adults is impacted by their different partnership histories. I am particularly interested in whether there are any differences in the social participation (activities involving contact with family, friends, acquaintances, children, grandchildren) of people who experienced divorce in life (I use a decomposition of the divorce rate to distinguish between those who had this experience when they were relatively young, middle-aged, or older)....

Siblings in Old Age – Relationships ‘On the Edge’?

Dana Sýkorová

Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2021, 57(2): 193-218 | DOI: 10.13060/csr.2021.013

Older age, especially advanced age, is accompanied by changes in the social relations amongst the elderly and specifically by a decrease in the size of their social networks: peers pass away and contact with other people may be restricted, often due to declining physical and mental strength. Gerontosociology notes the elderly's preferential focus on the family, which is usually defined in terms of intergenerational relationships and a support network in old age. Relationships with siblings lie outside the research interest of gerontosociology because they are considered peer relationships, which is to say that they, too, are subject to the effects...

Late-Age Siblinghood and Siblinghood-in-law as Interdependent and Mutually Permeating Social Roles

Hana Šlechtová

Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2021, 57(2): 219-244 | DOI: 10.13060/csr.2021.011

The article looks at the social roles of the sibling and the sibling-in-law among older adults and how these roles are interconnected. It is based on an analysis of data collected in Czechia in 2017-2019 from 91 qualitative interviews and three focus groups with participants aged 50+. The concept of social roles used here considers a plurality of role repertoires, which actors can choose from, combine, and variously emphasise. Focusing on the social roles of the sibling and the sibling-in-law shows how each of these roles is specific. Both of these roles have a repertoire of targeted support for sibling/ kin cohesiveness and a repertoire of common...
