What Do They Really Want? Limitations of Research Investigating Parents’ Demands for Quality Compulsory EducationArticles

Radka Smith Slámová, Jana Straková

Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2026, 62(2): 117-141 | DOI: 10.13060/csr.2025.001

The study analyses the challenges in identifying parents’ preferences regarding quality compulsory education for their children. The first part presents findings from two quantitative surveys conducted on representative samples (N = 961, 1,739) of parents of preschool and school-aged children. Based on an analysis of data obtained from 26 in-depth interviews with middle-class parents, the study then illustrates four key factors that need to be considered when determining parents’ educational preferences and formulating systemic measures. The results show that: (1) Parents interpret broadly defined criteria in different ways; (2) Parents’...

Parents under Pressure? Involvement in Childcare and the Perception of Time Pressure among Czech Mothers and FathersArticles

Jana Klímová Chaloupková

Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2026, 62(2): 89-116 | DOI: 10.13060/csr.2025.008

This study examines the link between involvement in childcare and perceived time pressures among parents with at least one child up to 12 years of age in the Czech Republic. Using data from the Czech Household Panel Survey (2015), this study combines multiple indicators of subjective time pressure with time-use diary data on time spent on different types of childcare activities. Multilevel mixed-effect logistic regression models reveal the gendered link between childcare participation and the perception of time stress and time deficits in terms of family time, personal time and sleep. Long working hours contribute to time stress and a lack of personal...

Changing Participation in Adult Education and Training in the Czech Republic: Who Participates and Who Is Likely to Participate in AET?Articles

Jan Kalenda, Ilona Kočvarová, Jitka Vaculíková, Tomáš Karger

Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2026, 62(2): 143-167 | DOI: 10.13060/csr.2024.039

Participation in adult education and training (AET) is one of the primary strategies of the European Commission for developing human capital and retaining a competitive labour force. AET is also regarded as a means to tackle educational inequality as it can provide a second chance at gaining qualifications or job-related skills. This study uses data from three rounds of the Adult Education Survey (AES) involving a total of 25,405 respondents to investigate empirically the changes in the participation of adults (ages 25 to 64) in AET in the Czech Republic (CZE). Building on the study by Simonová and Hamplová (2016), this article aims to show how participation...

‘We Condemn the Sin, not the Sinner’: Understanding the Attitudes of Adventist and Baptist Believers in Montenegro towards SexualityArticles

Vladimir Bakrač, Branislav Radeljić

Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2026, 62(1): 57-76 | DOI: 10.13060/csr.2024.033

Although we have seen studies on religion and sexuality in the West come to dominate the relevant scholarship, the postsocialist environment with a predominantly Orthodox population has received less attention. This paper fills the gap by examining the attitudes of Adventist and Baptist believers in Montenegro, with a particular focus on abortion, premarital sexual activities and non-heteronormative sexuality. Because we were dealing with a minority population, we opted for a qualitative methodology and conducted semistructured interviews with 17 Adventist and 15 Baptist believers. As observed, our research participants’ position towards sexuality...

Community Psychiatry as a Not-for-Profit Business: a Study of an Emerging Mental Health CentreArticles

Martin Novák

Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2026, 62(1): 33-56 | DOI: 10.13060/csr.2024.023

The article deals with the study of community psychiatry in the Czech Republic and aims to connect the historical and political context of the establishment of this discipline with the changes in its practice arising from the reform of the psychiatric care currently underway. Community psychiatry can be understood as psychiatry’s attempt to maintain its position as the hegemon of social control through biological and psychological means in an era of rising neoliberal governments. In the Czech Republic, community psychiatry did not emerge as part of medicine but took shape as part of civic activism for the rights of people with psychiatric diagnoses,...

‘Being a Good Neighbour and Good Steward of the Land’: Anthropocentric and Biocentric Attitudes among Representatives of Environmental Organisations and Their Significance for the Success of Landscape Governance StrategiesArticles

Jana Stachová

Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2026, 62(1): 3-31 | DOI: 10.13060/csr.2024.031

The shape of the landscape depends not only on natural and climatic conditions, but also on the social demand as to what the landscape should look like and what functions it should fulfil. Approaches to landscape governance thus reflect the interests and attitudes of the public and social groups. One segment of society that is involved in landscape governance is the branch of civil society devoted to the environment. This article presents the results of a sociological study aimed at identifying and analysing attitudes towards landscape and strategies of landscape governance among Czech environmental organisations whose activities directly or indirectly...

‘I Know There Are Smart People There’ – Private Schools as an Investment in Children’s Social CapitalArticles

Kateřina Lojdová, Beatrice-Elena Chromková Manea

Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2025, 61(4): 375-399 | DOI: 10.13060/csr.2024.017

The rapid growth of private schools in the Czech Republic raises the issue of equal access to education. Czech research on external differentiation in education has mainly focused on multi-year gymnasiums, while private schools have not yet received the same attention. Private schools in the Czech Republic tend to appeal to middle-class parents with liberal views and an orientation towards personal development. Our research focuses on the choice of a private school from the perspective of students’ parents. The research question was: How are the advantages of private school for their child constructed in the narratives of students’ parents?...

Electoral Coalitions in the Shadow of the Pandemic: Factors of Electoral Support and Changes to Them in the Czech Parliamentary Elections in 2017 and 2021Articles

Michael Drašar

Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2025, 61(4): 401-422 | DOI: 10.13060/csr.2024.018

This article maps the changes in the factors of electoral support and their importance for Czech political parties united in electoral coalitions in the elections to the Chamber of Deputies in 2017 and 2021. The analysis also includes the factor of mortality, which played a key role in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The research is designed as a quantitative analysis of the election results in 205 municipalities with extended powers and in Prague in relation to six socio-economic and demographic factors. The analysis found that the influence of individual factors often changes in the case of separate and joint candidacies. If a variable appears...

A Classic Sociologist for Our Time: Pierre Bourdieu’s General TheoryArticles

Marek Skovajsa

Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2025, 61(4): 345-374 | DOI: 10.13060/csr.2024.022

This paper draws attention to one possible intellectual factor that has contributed to Pierre Bourdieu’s undeniable status as a contemporary classic. Despite his frequent sorties against general theorising, Bourdieu has produced his own kind of general sociological theory that, in a crowd of competitors, is better suited than most to meeting the demand that is present across the field of sociology and other social sciences for a general but non-universalist theory. It is possible to distinguish four relevant properties of theories, which are correlated but mutually irreducible one to the other: conceptual generality, generality of application...

Ladislav Holy: A Larger-than-Life Character with Extremely Strong Opinions. An Interview with Kate Holy (featuring Petr Skalník)Interview

Lenka Jakoubková Budilová

Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2025, 61(3): 323-332

This interview with Kate Holy, widow of the prominent Czech-British anthropologist Ladislav Holý, offers both a personal and scholarly perspective on the life and work of this remarkable figure in social anthropology. Conducted in connection with the forthcoming Czech translation of Holý’s Anthropological Perspectives on Kinship, the conversation combines Kate Holy’s memories with additional commentary by Czech anthropologist Petr Skalník. The text covers Holý’s life in exile in Scotland, his academic work and field research in Africa (among the Berti and the Toka), his relationship with both Scotland and his homeland, which he left...

The Tendency to Agree with Items in Social Survey Regardless of Their Content as a Possible Source of BiasArticles

Patrik Havan, Peter Halama, Michal Kohút

Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2025, 61(3): 301-321 | DOI: 10.13060/csr.2024.013

Acquiescence is defined as the tendency of respondents to shift their answer towards agreeing rather than disagreeing with items, regardless of the items’ content. As a response style, it can be a significant factor in distorting research results. This article examines the nature, predictors, and consequences of this response style and the possibility of identifying and controlling it. The results of time stability and domain/method specificity of acquiescence suggest that it is more a participant-related than situational-related construct. Two categories of correlates or predictors of acquiescence were identified: a high level of social deference/conformity...

Options, Problems and Guidelines for Measuring Interrater Agreement – a Descriptive ApproachArticles

Lucia Kočišová

Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2025, 61(3): 277-300 | DOI: 10.13060/csr.2024.007

Interrater agreement is one way to establish reliability (and also validity) in social science research. The traditionally preferred method of measuring interrater agreement is the descriptive approach owing to its simplicity. This approach is also associated with a number of different agreement indices, which makes it difficult to select the right index. This article summarises theoretical definition on the prevailing approach used to measure interrater agreement (in both quantitative and qualitative research). From a practical point of view, the article focuses on the possibilities of measuring agreement by using percent agreement, the kappa coefficient,...
